Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can be frightening and painful, especially if they occur due to serious trauma and injury. We are happy to be of assistance and provide guidance. If you are having an issue with your teeth and it is not urgent, you can leave us a voicemail or text us at 404-872-3838 and we will get back with you during normal business hours.

If you need immediate attention after hours, call our emergency phone number at 470-250-4641 and our on-call staff member will help you. If you are unable to reach someone after hours, please call 911 and seek medical attention.

What classifies as a dental emergency?

  • Broken or cracked tooth/teeth. In minor cases, these types of incidents can be cared for during regular office hours. For major broken or cracked teeth, give us a call as soon as you can. Keep the tooth as clean as possible. Depending on the pain level of the cracked or broken tooth, we can repair the damage quickly to ease your discomfort.

  • Broken jaw. Jaw fractures can greatly affect your dental health. As the anchor of your teeth, an untreated cracked or broken jaw can deform teeth and damage roots and cause you huge amounts of pain. Contact us in cases of minor damage or if you have facial swelling. If the fracture is major due to serious injury, we advise our patients to seek immediate medical care.

  • Severe toothache. The problem causing the pain can likely be discovered and treated in a single visit. If the problem is more serious, we can discuss how to best ease the discomfort and treat the problem correctly. If you have started having recurring issues with pain when eating, gum irritation or temperature sensitivity, these can be precursors to a more severe toothache. In more advanced cases, it’s likely that tooth decay or infection has occurred.

  • Broken or dislodged crowns. If the crown is still in one piece and you are able, a temporary cement from the store can be used to put the crown back in until we are able to assess it. If that is not possible, it is best to keep the area clean and try to get in to see us as soon as you can.

  • Facial swelling. If you have pain and swelling in your face or jaw, don’t hesitate to call us right away. A severe tooth or gum infection, usually caused by an abscessed tooth, can spread further into your jaw and surrounding tissue and can be life-threatening if not promptly treated. If you have facial swelling and it is outside of our business hours, please call 911.

  • Bleeding. If you are experiencing severe or continual bleeding from the mouth or gums, make a call to your local emergency dentist. Gum disease is usually the culprit and we will be happy to help get your oral health back on track.
